I have been teaching communication courses in higher education for the past 20 years. Prior to teaching, I was an entertainment journalist, working at numerous media organizations, including Entertainment Weekly, MTV, BET and CNN Headline News
I’m currently an Assistant Professor of Communication at Seattle University where I teach journalism courses, primarily multimedia storytelling, media systems and investigative reporting.
I received my Bachelor of Journalism from Northwestern University in 1995. I earned my Master of Arts in Dramatic Writing from New York University in 1997 and my Ph.D. in Media Studies from Union Institute and University in 2006.
My passion is creating documentary films with my production company, CrossRoads Productions, to be used as media literacy videos to educate students on various multicultural issues. I’m particularly interested in analyzing the media images of the African-American and LGBTQ communities.
You can find my Curved TV series and my documentary on social media relationships on my documentaries page.
When I’m not teaching or working on my film and writing projects, you can find me on my farm with my partner wrangling the goats, pigs and chickens.
I also love traveling the world with family and friends, especially cruises. To date, I have taken over 12 cruises, with my favorites being a Mediterranean cruise to Italy and the Greek islands as well as a Eastern Caribbean cruise to the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
